Bill Gates: Cryptocurrencies are responsible for deaths in a ‘fairly direct way’

Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates jumped down the rabbit hole Tuesday, doing an AMA (ask me anything) on popular news and discussion site Reddit.

Among the topics, Gates was asked for his two cents’ worth on the world of cryptocurrencies, where he expressed his concerns for what digital assets are used for and how the anonymity encourages illicit behavior, which is not a good thing.

‘The Governments ability to find money laundering and tax evasion and terrorist funding is a good thing. Right now crypto currencies are used for buying fentanyl and other drugs so it is a rare technology that has caused deaths in a fairly direct way. I think the speculative wave around ICOs and crypto currencies is super risky for those who go long.’

Gates has done somewhat of a U-turn on the cryptocurrency world. In 2014, Gates said bitcoin BTCUSD, -2.55%  was exciting and “better than currency in that you don’t have to be physically in the same place.”

In Gates’ defense, the preface for his argument was that bitcoin was cheap at the time. On Oct. 2, 2014, the day of his interview with Bloomberg, the price of bitcoin was $371, according to news and research site CoinDesk. It has since appreciated 2,700%, most recently trading above $10,500.

During the thread, one Reddit user responded to say that fentanyl can be purchased with cash, to which Gates said: “Yes—anonymous cash is used for these kinds of things but you have to be physically present to transfer it which makes things like kidnapping payments more difficult.”

Among the other insightful questions from the Reddit community were:

• “Hey Bill, Do you think Elon Musk is a supervillain and do you regret not becoming Batman?”

• “How different do you think your life would be if your name was Gill Bates?”

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bill Gates is the second-wealthiest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $93.1 billion.
