Pornhub subsidiary Tube8 has entered an agreement with the Vice Industry Token (VIT) to reward users with monetary incentives for watching adult videos on its platform and interacting with the content.
Per the recently struck deal, Tube8 will fully tokenize its platform, becoming one of the firsts in the porn industry to get onboard the blockchain bandwagon. However, neither of the parties involved in the process has so far revealed any specifics regarding the planned modus operandi of the new reward system.
Blockchain-Powered Adult Entertainment
Even though the details are scarce as to how Tube8 plans on implementing the move without any hiccups (don’t forget that the site draws about 150 million visits per month), the underlying premise of the concept is pretty straightforward. Users will be rewarded with VIT tokens for streaming and interacting with Tube8 videos.
Speaking of the new and rather courageous initiative from the company, Tube8 spokesperson Robin Turner, said:
“For as long as I can remember, getting paid to watch porn was always a pipedream; one that was always dreamed about, but never fully realized.”
While Tube8 is yet to announce a definitive timeline for the deployment of the new blockchain-powered system, it is expected to go live by the fall of 2018. All goes as per plan, Tube8 will establish itself as the first significant adult entertainment website in the world to introduce token-based rewards. Moreover, it could also be one of the firsts, if not the first, to pay users for their activities on the site.
“With the introduction of VIT, we are marking a paradigm shift in how people consume adult entertainment … Whereas before users would log in, watch a few videos and leave, VIT incentivizes them to create an account and interact with the content to generate Vice Tokens,” Turner added.
However, this is not the first time when a company in the adult entertainment business has opened up to cryptocurrencies. Pornhub recently announced that it would soon accept Tron payments. Similarly, the iconic Playboy magazine is also receiving bitcoin payments all across its platform.
Porn Enthusiasts Should Exercise Precaution Before Getting Too Excited
An intriguing move, no doubt; but the real benefit of tokenizing all of Tube8 is somewhat elusive, at least for the time being. First of all, the company is yet to declare how it will calculate the crypto-rewards. That in itself is going to be a considerable challenge considering the massive volume of traffic Tube8 draws on a daily basis.
With 10 million users and 150 million visits every month, it is next to impossible for most blockchain networks to process so many transactions. Ethereum, for example, can handle just about 15 transactions a second. That’s way less than what Tube8 would require to incentivize hundreds, if not thousands, of horny visitors for their activities on the site.
Also, with so many users onboard, there is always the possibility of a few of them trying to game the system for illegitimately maximizing their gains. With such possibilities into consideration, Tube8 is likely to have at least some deterrence in place to put a cap on the number of tokens that can be earned by individual users.
